From the President:

April 15th is coming FAST. Yup, only two things you can count on…home brew and Taxes. And take a wild guess as to which is more fun. SO…IT IS TIME TO PARTY! Sign up on the Forum and come on out to the Police Hut this Saturday, April 12 for PSB’s “Wurstoyster” spring party. Forget your taxes, come prepared to eat and sample beer. BRING HOME BREW.

Congratulations to all those brewers that entered beer in the Shamrock Open on March 15th.
Barry Ledford: 1st Best Of Show!...WOW!!!
Robert Leach: Four 1st Place ribbons and two 2nd Places (by my estimate he currently holds the #1 place in the 2008 Carolina Brewer of the Year)
Kassey Kidwell: One 1st and two 2nd Place ribbons
Joel Masters: One 1st and one 3rd Place ribbons
Carl Foster: One 1st Place
Katherine Shavo: One 3rd Place
Well done all!

Don’t forget, the next CBoY Competition scheduled is the US Open in Charlotte on May 10. It will be at this competition that PSB will be presented with the Firkin trophy for winning the Carolina Brew Club of the Year for 2007. WE WILL NEED A GOOD SHOWING OF PSB CLUB MEMBERS TO COLLECT THE TROPHY. We will also need a good showing of entries for the comp. Get those entries READY!

Congratulation go out to fellow brewer Aaron Schenk of the MALT brew club for winning the Highland Cup with his Cream Ale. His recipe will be brewed on a commercial basis by Highland. (http://www.highlandbrewing.com)
Well done Robert Leach and Barry Ledford for your winning beer in that comp.

Be sure to come to the annual BIG BREW DAY on May 3rd. Bet Mar is our registered site and the event is always fun. Sign up to help, brew, and be sure to bring a rookie brewer to introduce to this fun hobby.

If you haven’t noticed, our forum site has been retooled with a great deal of work by our tireless Webmaster, Ray Boland. Thank You Ray!

Monday, April 14th is our next club meeting at Zorba’s. This meeting will include a discussion on water quality, Big Brew Day planning, raffle, and of course home brew tasting. Dinner at 6:00, meeting at 7:00, and BE SURE TO BRING HOME BREW.
GO PSB!
Carl Foster

Competition Corner:

Shamrock went well. A big congratulations to Mr. Barry Ledford who took first place Best of Show for his American Pale Ale. That is usually a very big category with fierce competition so to not only win the category but to take it to Best of Show is really something. We had a number of ribbon winners including Katherine Shavo, Gary Kunes, Joel Masters, Kasey Kidwell, Harold Dowda, Carl Foster and of course Robert Leach. A full list of results can be found here: http://hbd.org/carboy/shamresult2008.htm. Good job each and every one of you. We're not in the lead...yet. Let's keep trying!

The next competition is the US Open which will be hosted in Charlotte, NC by the Carolina BrewMasters on May 10th. Registration is open as of April 11th and entries will be accepted through May 2 at 12:00PM. You can access the online registration form by following this link: http://maltsters.org/OnLineCBM08.htm. Get signed up and good luck. We will not have another meeting before the competition so we need to discuss shipping options at our meeting on the 12th and follow up on the forum.

As mentioned by President Carl this will be the competition at which PSB will be presented with the coveted Firkin. Let’s discuss getting a group together to go and accept this hard earned trophy.

There was no AHA Club-Only competition last month. This month is the AHA All Extract Extravaganza. It will be hosted by Urban Knaves of Grain in Naperville, IL. The beers are due by May 2nd and judging will take place on May 10th. Entries can be from any category from 1 to 23 but at least 50% of the fermentables MUST be from extract. Bring your extracts out for what is sure to be a fun competition. You new guys that have been hoarding your beers need to break them out for a shot at the big time. All you have to do is best one of the most prolific, most technical and most successful brewers in the club. Not to mention his current lead for Brewer of the Year. Bring on the HOMEBREW!

Report from the VP of Education and Recruitment:

April is upon us; spring is in the air! Time to enjoy the weather and crank up the brew output! Brew sessions are the perfect avenue to gain more knowledge as well as libations to be. Keep your eyes on the forum for future event dates. Speaking of, Big Brew Day is right around the corner. Mark your calendars for May 3rd. Come ready to brew and spread the gospel of homebrew. BBD has always proven to be a huge recruiting event. Let’s make 2008 the best year yet. Wear your PSB shirts and proudly proclaim your affiliation with the best brew club in the south!
This month’s topic will be water quality and how it affects your final product. Water is the main and yet the most often overlooked ingredient in beer. Come ready to learn and ask questions as our very own Brad Petit expounds on the quality of the H2O in our area.
I Brewus Ergo Sum *(Nonsensical Latin phrase for "I Brew Therefore I Am")

Report from the VP of Social Events:

Daniel Adams is late, as usual. Please check back, this will be updated as soon as I recieve his input.
