From the President:

Taxes… Yikes! It is almost too late to start working on your taxes now, so you might as well get your priorities straight: 1.) File Form 4868 2.) Brew a batch of delicious home brew 3.) Relax, have a home brew.

Our annual spring club party with oysters, beer and rain was a wild success. Thank you Pete Goodwin for your tireless work in set up, clean up, and your fine “chefsmanship” in steaming the little critters. Great time!

Congratulations to all those brewers that entered their “craft” beers in the Shamrock Open competition. Kudos to: Robert Leach for his first place, two second place, and two third place ribbons; Barry Ledford for his first place, second place, and third place ribbons; Yours truly for my third place ribbon; and to Kathy Shavo for her Honorable Mention! Way to go!
This was the first CBoY sanctioned competition of the year. It appears that the strong brewers at Battleground Brewers Guild in Raleigh have started the year in the lead with 38 club points. CARBOY appears to be in second place with 28 points, Carolina Brew Masters with 27 points, and PSB with 16 club points. Remember…UNDERDOGS DO BITE BACK and PSB can make up this small lead. We have done it before!

We are looking for ways to make it easier for club members to enter their beers in the competitions. Joel Masters, our VP of Competitions, has purchased two counter pressure bottle fillers for member use. He will be lead an instructional session on bottling at this month’s meeting.

Volunteers are being sought to transport entries to Columbia for the distant PSB members including those in the beach area, Charleston area, Clinton, and from Phil O’s house.
Get your entries registered and ready for the US Open. It is scheduled for May 16th and YOUR BEER IS NEEDED! Your help in judging is also needed, so sign up on the internet when you register your beers.

Dan Adams, VP of Fun, is scheduling a road trip to Aiken Brewing this month. Don’t miss this event. Brewers Randy Doucet, Jonney Grunnet, et al, do a remarkable job of brewing. They had NINE of their beers on tap last week. ALL were delicious.

Check out Gerald Jowers’ excellent beer article in last week’s Free Times: http://www.free-times.com/index.php?cat ... 3091783573

We will judge which beer to enter in the Club Only competition this month. “Extract Beer” is the style, so, if you have an extract brew to show off, bring it to the meeting.

This is YOUR club. PAY YOUR DUES, sign up to host a brew session, join in on the fun, make new friends, and BREW ON!

I’ll see you at Zorbas on Monday the 13th, 6:00 dinner, 7:00 meeting. Be sure to bring home brew to share and to show off.

Competition Corner:

The US Open in Charlotte will be held May 16. Registration is now open and will close on May 6. Entries are due by May 8. Bet-Mar is listed as a pick-up point on the Carolina Brewmasters website. The date is not yet listed but will probably be either May 2 or May 9. This is Competition #2 of our circuit so let get those entries in there. It's probably too late to brew for this compeition but there may still be time to bottle.

Speaking of bottling, I now have the club-owned Blichman Beer Gun and Phil's counter pressure filler for member use. I'll be demonstrating this equipment Monday night at the club meeting. Barry may help me with the Beer Gun.

We will also judge extract only beers for the next Club-Only Competition. Beers may be in any category 1-23 but must be at least 50% extract. Please bring bottles for judging and two extra bottles for shipping should you win Monday night.

Report from the VP of Social Events:

Fellow brewers! A few events of note this month.

First up: April 18th is the Hickory Hops Fest in Hickory, NC. Live music, over 35 microbrewries.
Info is at http://www.hickoryhops.com

Saturday, April 25th the club is planning our yearly day trip to Aiken Brewing! Come carpool with us as we hang with the good folks in beautiful Aiken and sample the latest creations from Herb, Johnny, and the gang. More info at the meeting and in a thread soon to be started on the forums.

It's not too early to plan for large events like Charlotte Oktoberfest and the PSB Open in December! Figure out what you want to bring to these fantastic events and make our club proud.

We're also bringing back brew sessions on Saturdays! Come to the meeting and find out where the next one will be held. These are a great way to learn all about brewing beer, share your latest brews and hang out with your favorite beer geeks.

Enjoy the wonderful weather, take your allergy meds, and brew well!
