The PSB Newsletter Club Meeting at Zorbas on Monday, February 9th. Be there at 6PM. Meeting Agenda: Meeting Agenda From the President: Congratulations to all of the fine people at All About Beer for putting on their successful “World of Beer Festival” in January. What an event! Thanks to the hard work by everyone on the Brew Crew, this event seemed flawless. Every booth was kept full of beer and ice, slop buckets were carted off swiftly and discretely, and all brewing and beer related question answered politely and knowledgably. All of this performed in a long, 16 hour day and done eagerly with a smile. YOU GUYS AND GALS ROCK. Most crew members have picked up their complementary “booty”. If you have not, call me. Check out Gerald Jowers’ excellent write up in this week’s Free Times. http://www.free-times.com/index.php?cat ... 2094366239 Our Vice President of Competitions, Joel Masters, is not taking his new position lightly. Given the challenge to spearhead a strategy to win back the coveted Firkin’, he has formulated our “secret weapon” to regain our temporarily lost title as “Brew Club of the Year”. IT WILL TAKE AN EFFORT BY EVERYONE. Come to the meeting and find how you can do your part, but shhhh, don’t let the secret out of the club. After weeks of forming and managing the Brew Crew for the WBF, Dan Adams has taken his allotted two days off and is already planning social events for the coming year. A club party date of March 28th has been set and brewery road trip tours are being planned. Adam Bedenbaugh, our VP of Education and Recruitment, has planned out a year of interesting and useful topics for our education section of the monthly meetings. He will be calling on members to help share their experiences and knowledge. This month’s topic is “Wild Ales”. This is YOUR club. Pay your dues, sign up to host a brew session, join in on the fun, make new friends, and BREW ON! I’ll see you at Zorbas on Monday the 9th, 6:00 dinner, 7:00 meeting. Be sure to bring home brew to share and to show off. Carl Foster/ Prez Competition Corner:

Shamrock Open XIV March 14, 2009-Raleigh, NC U.S. Open-May 16, 2009 Charlotte, NC Coming up this month we're going to be hearing about brewing with bugs (i.e. bret, lacto, and pedio) and how they are used in producing a variety of wild ales. Going in the Belgian tradition this means of fermentation gives a large possibility of brewing options, although some think they taste like vinegar (aka Carl). One of the best resources I have ever found for brewing with any of these critters is "Wild Brews" by Jeff Sparrow. So, check it out if you're interested in crossing over to the dark, mystic side of brewing. The World Beer Festive was a blast and we had a lot of people come by the Palmetto State Brewers table. Hopefully, we got to teach a few new people about the hobby of homebrewing and a little about how beer is produced. I had a blast while at the WBF and I can't wait till next year. It was an incredible time for everyone there. Report from the VP of Social Events: Oh boy... February events! First off I can't thank you folks enough who helped out at the World Beer Festival. Columbia finally has pulled off a large, well-attended beer event and one that surely has room to grow and improve with the coming years. We couldn't have imagined something of this caliber 5 years ago, and a tip of the hat to all the hard-working volunteers who made it possible! Watch the forum for news, including a special Brew Crew only party that we are putting together (likely to take place in March) This month is chock full of great beer events! First is probably the Sexual Chocolate release party in Winston-Salem for the 7th. By the time you read this, Foothill's heavyweight chocolate beer will already be in the bellies of thirsty beer geeks. Additional events include: Tastings, gatherings and beer-kick offs at the Charleston Beer Exchange. The CBX is South Carolina's latest and best craft beer store, and a must-visit when you are down at the beach. They carry beers available nowhere else in the state, and are usually the first to get new releases. Check out their offerings, tap lineup, and events at their webpage: http://www.charlestonbeerexchange.com/blog For example: Tues 2/17 5pm to 7pm - Southern Tier Brewing South Carolina Launch Party with Les Addis of Advintage Distributing. Also upcoming at Barley's in Greenville is a Coast Firkin night! Friday, Feb 27th: Charleston South Carolina's own! Join us along with Dave & Jaime from Coast Brewing Co. as we tap not one but TWO Coast firkins! We'll have one filled with the extremely limited & extremely delicious Blackbeard the Imperial Stout & one filled with HopArt IPA. Barley's Taproom is the only place outside of Charleston to enjoy these delicious brews. Come out early and show Dave & Jaime how much Greenville enjoys their new local brewery! There is a Terrapin Beer dinner late this month at the Flying Saucer, watch the forum for details coming soon. Also watch for word on the next legendary PSB Police Hut party (can you say oysters?) and for brew session locations. If you are interested in hosting a brew session at your home, hit the forum and sign up! Always a good time, never a chore! Brew early and often! Secretary/Treasurer's Report: We have $5,135 that includes the revenue and expenses from the December competition. If you are a member and still have not received your taster glass...then you need to show up at a meeting:-) © 2008 Palmetto State Brewers, Inc. |
