Competition Corner:

It has been a few months since an AHA Club-Only competition but we’ve got one this month! We will be judging for the August 2, 2008 competition that is being hosted by Al Boyce and the Minnesota Homebrewers Association of Edina, MN. This competition is for all categories of MEAD! Bring something down from categories 24, 25, and/or 26 for us to judge. The due date for entries to arrive in Minnesota is 07/25 so I’ll need the winning entry and the accompanying entry forms on my desk by 07/18. It appears that two bottles will still be required.

The next Club-Only competition will be held in October in Michigan. We will judge those at our September meeting. That competition will be “Imperial Anything.” Acceptable categories include anything up to and including BJCP 23. Detailed information regarding OG, ABV, IBU, etc… WILL BE REQUIRED. Specifically include information relating to what makes the entry Imperial. Naturally big styles, dopplebock, eisenbock, and such, must have an OG equal to or greater than 1.100 and an ABV 10% or greater. With two months to go there is plenty of time to whip up one of the non-aging styles. Get busy and document the details.

The annual Queen of Beer competition is set for October 25th with entries being accepted from 09/25 – 10/11. Their website will be up for registration on 09/01. This competition is exclusively for the fairer sex . Males are not permitted to assist the Brewatrix in any capacity except as a mule. Anything that requires brains over brawn is strictly prohibited. Lady PSBers break out the implements of your art and make us proud! Good luck and may Ninkasi smile on your heady endeavors!

Report from the VP of Education and Recruitment:

Ahh, summer is in the air…. Thankfully we are developing quite a beach brew crowd. Welcome to all of the new coastal members from Pawley’s Island and Myrtle Beach. It was a pleasure to meet you all and welcome aboard! For those members that haven’t yet made it to a beach brew session, you don’t know what you’re missing. I’m personally looking forward to many more!
On the education front, our very own “gadget guru” Chris Willis is going to show how to properly construct a stir-plate using readily available materials. His version is amazingly adjustable. If time permits he may have a few more gadgets up his sleeve to share such as a “pour mans “ bottle filler as well as a counter flow wort chiller. It’s also my understanding that some lucky raffle ticket will win one or more of these fabulous items! Make sure to bring a few extra bucks to get in on the action!

Report from the VP of Social Events:

First: The 08 Beach Brew was a smashing success! Thanks to Brian and Co. for welcoming us with open glasses and for sharing some terrific homebrew! The 3 year mini-vertical of Stone Arrogant Bastard (05, 06, 07) was great fun and Brian's uber-drinkable porter put the hurt on all of us. We had a fire-spinning show, ribs / chicken / BBQ / pie, some crazy West Coast commercial beer, aged homebrew, endless games of cornhole and Tina discovered the internet. All in all a great time! I believe 4 batches of beer were brewed, with St. Ghetto "Ghetto Funk De-lite" tripel thing being the most... unorthodox. But onward to...
