From The President
Congratulations to all brewers that entered beers in the recently held U.S. Open in Charlotte. Thanks to those that attended the competition and helped out.
The following brewers received ribbons for their entries and scored points that will go towards the club standings in the Carolina Brew Club of the Year:
After two CBoy sanctioned competitions, it looks like Battleground Brewers Guild is well in first place with 97 club points, Carolina BrewMasters in second with 83 points, CARBOY in third place with 46 points, and PSB in fourth place with 41 points. WE CAN CATCH UP! GET BREWING!!!
Thanks go to Brendon Kelly for hosting the most recent brew session. I do hope your new patio was broken in correctly.
Come join in on the ROAD TRIP to Coast Brewing in Charleston on June 13th. Owners Jamie and David Merritt worked with Adam Bedenbaugh to put together a bulk grain purchase and a “pick up” is in order. Jamie and David are very skilled and knowledgeable brewers and have a great, compact micro brewery. Have you tried their “Hop Art IPA”? …WOW!
PSBer Dr. David Merz has agreed to host this meeting’s education topic on yeast. Come learn something new at Monday’s meeting.
This is YOUR club. PAY YOUR DUES, sign up to host a brew session, join in on the fun, make new friends, and BREW ON!
BE SURE TO BRING HOME BREW to share, be critiqued and to show off at our monthly meeting. Come bring your brewing questions, club members are always happy to share their knowledge.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday the 8th at Zorbas 6:00 dinner, 7:00 meeting.
Be sure to read Gerald Jowers' article in this week's Free Times.

With summer fast approaching, the competition circuit is taking a break. Can we as competitive brewers take a break? NO!!! Now is the time to bottle all those beers you brewed in the late winter and spring and get them ready for the fall competitions. If you have the facilities for cooler fermentations, brewing can also continue through the summer months.
There is also an interesting competition coming up sponsored by MALT and the Pisgah Organic brewing Company of Black Mountain, NC. The BOS winner gets to brew his/her recipe on the commercial equipment at Pisgah. The entry deadline is July 3 and the competition is July 11. For more information go to one of the following websites.
Keep brewing, keep bottling, and get ready to get back in the game when the Carolina Brewer of the Year Competitions resume in the fall.

Report from the VP of Education and Recruitment:
Ahhh…June is in the air and that means it time for some nice lite american lager. You can pick whatever you favorite is, but I've always had a soft spot for PBR. This week on the meeting agenda we will be discussing yeast and the immense effect they can have on beer. David Merz will be giving us a wonderful talk on yeast and potential advice on how to make better beer. And better beer is what we all want, right? So, please come by and see his wonderful talk. Then apply some new knowledge to your brewing!
Be sure to bring any homebrew that you have to the meeting so that everyone can taste your wonderful concoctions. Plus, it’s always nice to get some outside input on how amazing your beer is or on possible ways to fix your beer.
Also coming up we are having a Brewery tour on June 13th at 11am. If you live in Columbia we are meeting at BetMar at 9am to car pool down Charleston. Once, we’re at Coast we are going to be given a tour, a tasting, and we will be able to pick up the grain from the bulk grain buy. After the tour we are going to be getting some pizza from a local restaurant. Yummy!
Report from the VP of Social Events:
Events for June!
Hey all! Up for June we have a few events:
Coast trip and bulk grain buy pickup June 13th! Come join us as we trek down to Coast to pick up the grain from the bulk buy and tour their brewery. We'll do lunch in Charleston and hit up the nearly-world-famous Charleston Beer Exchange if there is interest. Meet at Bet-Mar at 9am Saturday, June 13th to carpool with us! See the forum and / or meeting for details.
This month is the Brick Store Pub's 12th anniversary. Watch the forum for announcements on the list of special kegs they'll be tapping for TWELVE DAYS STRAIGHT! The party ends June 27th with an incredible 12 kegs in 12 hours extravaganza. I don't have to tell you this is worth a trip to Atlanta.
There sadly is NO Beach Brew this month! We'll do an alternate Brewsession if we can nail down a venue. Check the forums for information.
On deck: We'll be discussing an Asheville trip at this month's meeting and don't forget that Oktoberfest, Asheville Brewgrass, All About Beer Durham and Brew at the Zoo are all a few short months away!
Drink well, drink often, and brew homebrew!
