Club Only Comp. – Porters
Events Planning

From the President:

It’s time to wear green, look for lucky four leafed clovers, cross your fingers, and hold your breath.
You did your recipe research and formulation, purchased your grains and/or extract, begged your friends for hops, had a water analysis taken, mashed, boiled, chilled, racked, babied, bottled, registered, and sent perfect beer to Raleigh. Here’s wishing the luck of the Irish to all that entered their home brewed beer in the March 15th Shamrock Open, 2008’s first Carolina Brewer of the Year competition!

Congratulations and thanks to Joseph for hosting a fun, tasty, and educational brew session. What a crowd of home brewers!
Be sure to mark your calendars and attend the March 29th brew session to be held at Bet Mar.

This month’s meeting should prove to be interesting. With the infamous Hop Shortage of 08’ swirling around us, we plan to discuss possible substitutes for hops in beer. Have you heard anything or have been gutsy enough to experiment? Come share with the crowd.
Think we’ll find anything?...come find out.

We will also taste, and select a Porter to represent PSB in the AHA Club only competition. Bring your home brewed Porters.

It is time to PARTY! The spring club party, The “WurstOyster”, is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at the police hut on the river. Bratwurst, beer and oysters, Oh My! Sign up on the forum or at Monday’s meeting. Do you have a keg of home brew to show off? Sign up and bring it along. You’ll be everyone’s hero. COME PARTY!

There’s lots of fun stuff going on…
Aiken Brewery tour, Highland Brewery tour, cigar and pint night, Coast Brewery tour and food pairing, brew sessions, parties, education sessions, Big Brew Day, competitions, BJCP training, club glasses, etc., etc., etc.
Come join in on the fun and of course, if you are going to be lucky, KEEP BREWING HOME BREW!

See you Monday, March 10th at Zorba’s. Dinner at 6:00, meeting at 7:00, and be sure to bring home brew.
GO PSB!
Carl Foster

Competition Corner:

Shamrock is this Saturday the 15th. Maybe some of you lucky brewers will be able to attend and judge. I hear they put on a very good comp. No word yet on the number of PSB entries but I know there was a quite a buzz on the forum about getting everybody’s beers there. A big thanks to Harold for taking the time to get our entries from Bet-Mar to Charlotte for pickup. That was a fine gesture and someone should buy him a beer at Monday’s meeting.

The next competition will be the U.S. Open in Charlotte on the 10th of May. Make sure you don’t drink your entire stash before setting aside a few for this important competition.

Last month Dr. Leach won the club only competition in the Dark Lager category. Sadly he did not win, place or show. I suspect the bottles were broken or some other misfortune befell them. Hopefully he has received his score sheet by now explaining why exactly they did not choose his beer. If you would like more information about the Club-Only standings please follow this link

This month’s AHA club only competition is the Perfect Porter Challenge. We’ll critique them all and send the best to Indianapolis, Indiana where this category 12 competition will be hosted by Ron Smith and the Foam Blowers of Indiana (FBI). The entries are due March 21 so in order to guarantee they will arrive at the competition on time it will be necessary to mail them on the 11th. For that to happen you will need to bring two for the club to try plus two more to send off. Bring out your best (and your worst) for the fun!

Next month is the AHA All Extract Extravaganza. Entries can be from any category from 1 to 23 but at least 50% of the fermentables MUST be from extract. My kind of competition! We have a lot of very good extract only brewers so this will be a great meeting to attend even if you don’t have a beer to enter.

Report from the VP of Education and Recruitment:

2008 has started out with a bang. We’ve had some great speakers covering a variety of topics and they keep coming! This month’s topic will be hop substitutions. Talk about a timely topic! We’ve also had a request to cover appropriate glassware, different types of grain, beer and cheese pairing, etc.. etc…. Further topic suggestions are always encouraged! Let’s all learn from one another. There’s a wealth of information in the club, time to take proper advantage of it!
On the recruitment front, Spring is in the air which means festivals are right around the corner. Please spread the word of PSB to other beer brewing/loving brethren!

Report from the VP of Social Events:

It’s March! Already? Yes! By the time you read this, the Aiken Brewing tour will be behind us. Hope your head is alright!

Here’s what’s going down in the area. This month is short on homebrew events but there are a few commercial beer happenings.

March 19th Greenville
Flying Dog "Garde Dog" Release Party @ Barley's Taproom

March 20th, Asheville
Brusin' Ales Unibroue 6 Course beer dinner

Bruisin' Ales hosts this six-course beer dinner featuring the beers of Unibroue and the delectable tapas of Asheville's Zambra. Chef Adam is cooking with the beer in every single course! We can barely contain ourselves. This is one bad*ss menu.

March 21st, Asheville
The Terrapin Brewery in Athens, Ga., is kicking of their little Side Project at Brusin' Ales. Side Project is a brand new single-batch 22 oz. bottle series. Can you guess the name? Hop Shortage Ale.

John Wetzel will be representing the brewery on Friday, March 21 from 5-7pm where we'll be sampling:
Terrapin Rye Pale (5.3% abv)
'06 Terrapin All-American Imperial Pilsner (7.5% abv)
Hop Shortage IPA
'08 Terrapin Rye Squared (8.5% abv)
