From the President:

“Here’s to cheating stealing, fighting, and drinking.
If you cheat, cheat death.
If you steal, steal a woman’s heart.
If you fight, fight for a brother.
If you drink, drink with me!”

March is here! Time for March madness, snow, sun, 75 degree weather, Friday the 13th, competitions, parties, St. Patty’s Day, the luck of the Irish, Irish toasts…and home brewing! What a grand month this is!

Good luck to everyone that entered beers in the upcoming Shamrock Open competition. This is the first CBoY sanctioned competition of the year and the beginning to getting back our title of "Club of the Year".

Congratulations to Dr. Preston Craig for recently earning your PhD. Chemistry will never be the same. We wish you the best of luck in your new endeavors in Colorado and make sure to let us know when you’ll be hosting your brew session out there!

Keep writing Gerald!

Our fingers are crossed for Adam Bedenbaugh, VP of Education and Recruitment. He just took the BJCP exam in Raleigh in hopes of becoming a certified beer judge. He will host the educational topic on “Wood Aged and Smoked Beers” at this month’s meeting.

Our annual spring club party will be held on March 28th at the police hut. Oysters and beer are on the menu and camping is allowed. Sign up and attend!

There is talk of need for another bulk grain purchase. We’ll take a reading on interest at the meeting.

We will judging who’s beer to enter in the Club Only competition this month, “Beers with OG > 1.080”. If you have brewed a big beer that you are proud of, bring to the meeting.

This is YOUR club. Pay your dues, sign up to host a brew session, join in on the fun, make new friends, and BREW ON!

I’ll see you at Zorbas on Monday the 9th, 6:00 dinner, 7:00 meeting. Be sure to bring homebrew to share and to show off.

Report from the VP of Education and Recruitment:

Coming up this month we're going to be hearing about brewing with bugs (i.e. bret, lacto, and pedio) and how they are used in producing a variety of wild ales. Going in the Belgian tradition this means of fermentation gives a large possibility of brewing options, although some think they taste like vinegar (aka Carl). One of the best resources I have ever found for brewing with any of these critters is "Wild Brews" by Jeff Sparrow. So, check it out if you're interested in crossing over to the dark, mystic side of brewing.

The World Beer Festive was a blast and we had a lot of people come by the Palmetto State Brewers table. Hopefully, we got to teach a few new people about the hobby of homebrewing and a little about how beer is produced. I had a blast while at the WBF and I can't wait till next year. It was an incredible time for everyone there.

Report from the VP of Social Events:

Ahh, March. We're just warming up for a great month of beer - literally! Is this weather nuts or what? Time to get brewing!

Come out to our ever-fun meetings and discuss wood-aged beers with the crew. We'll also be talking about the Spring Club Party on March 28th. All paid-up PSB members are invited to attend! Bring a friend! Bring beer! Bring a side! Eat and drink the evening away by the river with your homebrew buddies! These events are always a blast and if you've been to one I sure don't have to sell it.

Watch for an Aiken Brewing roadtrip on a fine April Saturday and (hopefully) the return of our neglected brew sessions at member homes!

Out of town events: Rob Tod, owner and head brewer at Allagash, will be doing a dinner / pairing at the wonderful Evo Pizzeria in Charleston on March 31st. Tickets are $40. EVO is, in my opinion, one of the finest restaurants Charleston has and surely has the best beer selection. More info at http://www.evopizza.com

On an unrelated note, we said goodbye to Dr. Craig recently and toasted him at the Saucer as he left for Colorado. Raise a brew next time you drink and wish him well!
