The PSB Newsletter Club Meeting at Zorbas on Monday, May 11th. Be there at 6PM. Meeting Agenda: Club Only Competition From the President: Now that everyone has sent two bottles of each home brew to the US Open competition in Charlotte, home beer inventories must be very low. That means only one thing; IT IS TIME TO BREW AGAIN! Our road trip to visit Aiken Brewery last month was a great success thanks to Randy Ducette and Jonny Grunnett. Along with tastings of each of the seven beers on tap, recipes and detailed brewing techniques were discussed. Many thanks for sharing your vast knowledge and superb brew. We’ll all have to use the knowledge that we learned since it is TIME TO BREW AGAIN. Registration is now closed for the US Open competition, hosted by Carolina BrewMasters in Charlotte on May 16th. Good luck to all that entered beer. Keep your ear to the track, your eyes to the sky, and watch the forum. Adam is spearheading a bulk grain buy…very soon. Then, it will be TIME TO BREW AGAIN! Carolina BrewMasters has announced that October 10th is the date for their annual Oktoberfest. Again, PSB members will be asked to join in on the fun and to share beers brewed by members. Jamie Sox has agreed to be our coordinator. In order to be prepared for the fest, IT IS TIME TO BREW AGAIN! Kevin and Wendy Deaton have asked that I announce that they plan to host a private BBG at their house on May 23rd. PSB club members are invited. Since there is limited space, it will be limited to a first come first served basis. Contact the Deatons for reservations. This is YOUR club. PAY YOUR DUES, sign up to host a brew session, join in on the fun, make new friends, and BREW ON! BE SURE TO BRING HOME BREW to share, be critiqued and to show off at our monthly meeting. Come bring your brewing questions, club members are always happy to share their knowledge. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday the 11th at Zorbas 6:00 dinner, 7:00 meeting. PS IT IS TIME TO BREW AGAIN Competition Corner:
OK folks we're now at halftime. Time to head to the locker room, get a pep-talk, revise some strategy, and come out stronger and smarter for the second half! If you're reading this before Saturday, there's still time to get your beers to Bet-Mar for pickup for the US Open competition in Charlotte. Now is a great time to be brewing for the Fall Competition schedule. The weather is great and it's still not too hot for all types of brewing. There still plenty of time for Oktoberfest lagers, bocks, doppelbocks and barleywines. There's plenty of time for other lighter ales and lagers, too. Just don't drink 'em all up before the fall competitions (hard to do!). I have sent Brandon's stout to the Club-Only competition for extract brews. I have also received my scoresheets on the Sammichlaus clone back from the Club-Only High Gravity competition. It scored well (32) but did not advance. The next Club-Only event will be judged at either the July or August meeting and will be for all Category 7 beers-Amber Hybrids-a.Northern German Altbier, b. California Common, and c. Dusseldorf Altbier. Phil & Jim-How did the bottling go with the new club equipment?-Let us know at the club meeting. Another day and another dollar. This week’s meeting we are going to venture into the hard work that Chris Willis has put into many of the beer geek toys that he owns. One of the topics that will be talked about is how to make your very own stir plate. Stir plates are a wonderful tool in creating a starter with a higher yeast count because of the increased surface air and therefore more oxygen diffusion into the starter. Getting higher yeast cell counts are vial in the production of lager and higher alcohol beers. Also getting your yeast cell numbers up can help prevent bacterial and wild yeast growth because the brewer’s yeast will out compete them. Who wouldn’t want to decrease their likelihood of an infection? A bulk grain buy is currently within the works. I am talking to Jamie at Coast Brewing about organizing a bulk grain buy through them. As soon as I get all of information together I will post it on the forum about the details of what you can buy. We're going to try and make the ordering process have a very short turn over time. Once we order the grain we will then take a club trip down to Charleston to not only pick up the grain, but also to tour the brewery and taste all of the wonderful beers they have on tap. Report from the VP of Social Events: Hey ya'll! Couple of very fun events coming down the line, check 'em out! Wendy and Kevin Deaton are generously hosting a BBQ at their home May 23rd. Check the forum and sign up! What else goes better with Memorial day than homebrew and pork?! Unless you feel like a roadtrip! Also scheduled that day is the first ever Beer Advocate South Carolina Meetup. It's at Farringdon Bistropub in Summerville and is all about delicious commercial beer. Check the link here for details. http://beeradvocate.com/events/info/24757 The ever popular Beach Brew with Brian Mosley (BBWBM) and crew is scheduled for Saturday, June 27th at Brian's home on Pawley's island. Beer is brewed, beer is drunk, cornhole is played, and TONS of good food gets eaten! Check the forum for details, you do NOT want to miss this - it's one of the highlights of the club year! Watch for info at the June meeting on a bulk grain buy through COAST Brewing in Charleston! We will turn the grain pickup into a PSB event. Finally, thanks to Aiken Brewing for hosting April's tour. Great times; we'll do it again next year! Beat the heat with beer! Secretary/Treasurer's Report: There is $4,478.37 in the PSB account. The following members are overdue.
