Meeting Agenda:

Additives in Brewing
AHA Judging - Imperial Something
Tasting

From the President:

Good luck to everyone that has entered beers into MALT’s BRBO beer competition to be held in Asheville on September 13th. This is the third of five competitions of the Carolina Brewer of the Year circuit.
PSB currently holds the esteemed title of “Carolina Brew Club of the Year for 2007” and we members need to keep brewing and entering in order to maintain our title. GO PSB!

Due to scheduling conflicts, the date for the 10th Annual Palmetto State Brewers Open Competition (PSBO10) has changed back and forth a few times, sorry. The date is now set in stone for Saturday, December 6th, 2008 and will be held once more at Jaderloon. Gerald Jowers has accepted the responsibility of Competition Organizer and will need everyone’s help. Mark your calendar and come be a part of history!

If you haven’t read Gerald Jowers’ most recent “Free Times” article, here it is:

It looks like the Samuel Adams beer pairings dinner was a success!

The next AHA club only competition category will be “Imperial Anything”. Bring four bottles of your best home brewed Imperial of any style to Monday’s meeting and the club will judge which one will be sent off to represent PSB in the upcoming AHA club only competition.

The stifling heat of our Carolina summer is waning. That means it must be time to have a club fall PARTY, maybe a camping trip, maybe BOTH. Come to Monday’s meeting to set a date(s) and plan.

The officers met recently and have decided that they would like to encourage spousal/significant-other participation in the club. To that end, they recommend that starting in January 2009, there be a couples discount in club dues with the first member at full amount and the second at the discounted rate of $10.

Monday, September 8th is our next club meeting at Zorba’s. Dinner at 6:00, meeting at 7:00, and BE SURE TO BRING HOME BREW.
GO PSB!

Carl Foster/Prez

Competition Corner:

Congratulations to Bob Leach for securing a third place spot at the MCAB X competition in Texas. Not only did he bring home a ribbon but he did so in the very competitive pale ale (10a) category. That’s a quite challenge. Good job Bob!

Make sure you wear your drinking socks on Monday because this month’s Club Only Competition is called Imperial Anything. As the name suggests eligible entries include just about any beer from any category up to 23 as long as it’s a biggie. Massive malts, humongous hops and voracious yeast are all welcome. Make sure you specify the OG, FG and state what makes your beer Imperial. Styles that are Imperial by nature must have an OG of 1.100 or greater AND an ABV of 10% or greater. No wimpy beers allowed. As always, bring two bottles to judge and two to ship.

There will not be a Club Only competition in October. November’s Club Only will be for IPAs. Break out your guidelines and brew up something from category 14. Please bring plenty of beer for this competition because it will be the Monday after the Presidential election. I don’t know about you guys but by the time the election is over I’m going to need a drink, no matter who wins!

Report from the VP of Education and Recruitment:

Brewers, time to get your festival hats out and start punishing your livers in earnest! Anyone attending any of the upcoming festivals please wear your beloved PSB garb. Let’s let the non-initiated brethren know who we are! We’ll have our banner as well as business cards on display at the Charlotte Oktoberfest. Let’s drum up some more interest in the fine art of homebrewing!
This month’s presentation will be on odd brewing additives. We’ve all had the notion that something unusual might just work. Let’s learn from the past experiences of others, good or bad! I’m still quite sure that the fabled onion beer is best suited for quenching one’s thirst in Hell, but hey, what do I know, other brewer’s seem to find the idea reasonable! If you’ve used any additives and would like to share your experiences then this will be the meeting to do so! I look forward to hearing from you all!

Report from the VP of Social Events:

See us to try a Better Bottle or anti-foam -- we are stocked up on both.

Want to conserve on hops? Use Woodruff & Heather Tips in a Vanilla Cream Ale. See Mark's brewsession recipe in September's BYO.
